IMAM SHAMIL, THE LION OF DAGESTAN

Great Muslim Lives returns with a biography film on the life and legacy of Imam Shamil of Dagestan. The man who shielded the Muslim community from Russian might for a quarter of a century with only a handful of dedicated disciples. Imam Shamil, also known as the Lion of Dagestan and the Eagle of the Mountains was a profoundly spiritual religious guide, a Sufi of the Naqshbandi order and a deeply intellectual scholar who gained the respect and admiration of friends and foe at home and abroad.

Towards the end of his legendary life, Imam Shamil travelled to Makkah and Madinah to perform the ceremonial Hajj pilgrimage, where he met with Emir Abdel—Qadir al-Jazairy and also attracted the attention of large crowds of pilgrims and non-pilgrims seeking to meet him during his stay. Eventually he died in Madinah a short time thereafter, he was buried besides the Prophet Muhammad’s mosque in Jannatul Baqi’.

This film explores his early life leading to the his rise as both a commander and a spiritual guide for his people.
